Sort out the essentials first
Packing starts before you choose your clothes. Make a list of the documents your advisor told you about, your confirmed bookings, your arrival address and the contacts you'll need. Keep a digital copy you can easily access and another you can check offline. Review the documents specific to your program before you leave.
Think about your routine at your destination
Choose clothes based on the weather and the activities you'll be doing. Ask whether your job or course requires a uniform, specific footwear or any materials, and which items you'll be given when you arrive. Prioritize comfortable clothes that are easy to mix and match: bringing fewer useful things is usually more practical than filling your suitcase with options you won't use.
Pack your carry-on
Set aside what you need for the trip and your first few hours: documents, phone, charger, a change of clothes and your accommodation details. Check the size, weight and allowed items with your airline. For medications and restricted products, check the official requirements of your destination and your carrier before packing.
Have your arrival sorted out
Write down how you'll get from the airport, who to notify and where to meet your contact, if applicable. Download any directions you may need and share your itinerary with someone you trust. Before you close your suitcase, go over the list with your advisor: details vary by program, accommodation and season.
