Name: Juan G.
Age: 23 years
Occupation: Architecture Student
Destination: AVON, CO
Company and position where you work: The Ritz-Carlton, Bachelor Gulch, Bus Person.
-We would like to know how you are and how you feel, as a participant in the Work & Travel USA program
Very well, it is the 4th time that I do the program so everything was excellent, working at the Ritz, the housing haha everything was excellent, the only problem was that at the end the program got canceled because of the coronavirus earlier but taking that out the experience was great.
-What was the experience for?
It helped me improve my English especially with the listening. I really liked getting to know other places, another work environment.
Previously I had also been a bus person, but this season they changed me to the bartender's assistant and I liked it because I spoke more with all the guests and had more contact with people.
I was also staying in a family home, they offered me a room where there were also other J1s, but since the visa was given to me 1 day before traveling I had to go without accommodation, I only had a temporary housing and that's why I got this, it was good.
-Was the job as you imagined it?
I did not know that I was going to be a bartender's assistant, first with my original position we opened a sushi restaurant but since there were no tasks to give me, I asked to be changed, and there I was transferred to a bartender's assistant (bar-back)
I really liked helping the bartender, I learned how to make a few drinks, but most of all he cleaned, arranged the glasses, refilled the alcohol bottles and all that.
-How was the work environment? How was the relationship with other coworkers?
I had no problem, everyone helped a lot. I only had a problem with 1 or 2 servers that did nothing but I talked to the manager and they changed for you, they all explained what I needed, I'm really good.
-What were the best things about your job? And the worst?
The best being Bar-back haha after 4 seasons I had another job, and also the work environment and the worst the truth is that I did not have any problem and if I had a problem speak it but there were no bad experiences.
-What did you do on your days off?
I went to visit other towns, we did not ski but we rented cars and we visited other places / cities, we went shopping and went every Wednesday to a bowling alley with those from work.
-Were you able to see other places?
With the car we went to Aspen, Denver, Utah (park city) where I visited other friends, and Vail who was just there.
-What surprised you the most?
What surprised me but more than anything for me, was my advancement of English from my first season to this, I no longer had to ask anyone something that I did not understand, the truth was that I had no problem understanding anything, that was a growth more personal.
The trip I did so many times because of the number of people you know from other countries, such as Paraguay, Peru, Costa Rica and you get to know their cultures too!
-Any anecdote that you take as a souvenir?
When he was at the bowling alley, a J1 boy was taken prisoner who knew him but was not with me, it was strange, I don't know how he ended up but I was surprised haha.
The return was also very crazy, I had plans to go to Europe after work and travel, but since I had to urgently return to Argentina and had no tickets, I had to run to get a flight from one day to the next.
-What would you recommend to someone who wants to follow in your footsteps?
Do not think about it and do not analyze the subject, do it and that's it! That it is written down, whether alone or with friends, it has to be written down.
All this information is very useful for us and for the students who want to travel with the program for the next seasons, so we really appreciate your collaboration.
