Alejandro B, 21 years old and student of Business Administration tells us his experience during his Work & Travel in Colorado
What would you recommend to someone who is going to travel?
To someone who is going to travel I would recommend that they make the most of their trip as much as they can because these are not things that are done or can be done every day. It is an incredible experience that is worth doing, given that you are in a different country, with a different culture getting to know new people all the time. I would also tell them to put this before everything else: making the most of the trip as much as possible in every way.
What did you like most about the experience?
There were two things I liked most about the experience. On the one hand, it was good to have to fend for myself, make my own decisions, find my own job (my second job) and live in a completely different country than Argentina. And on the other hand, the people that I met there were incredible. I made many friends, from Peruvians, Colombians and Argentines, to Americans. They are friends whom I continue talking to and sometime I might go and visit them.
What did you like the least and why?
What I liked least about the trip was that I had two jobs, but with a lot of working hours in both, that is to say, I worked quite a lot during the week. What I wanted to do was work, but there were days when my body was not having it, I felt I was over exerting myself. I´m not saying that it was bad, given that I made a lot of money working, but there were days when I wanted to throw it all out of the window. I left my house at 6 in the morning and arrived back at 11 at night, when I worked both jobs. It was exhausting.
Did your view of the USA change after your experience? How?
I don´t know if this trip changed my way of viewing the USA because I had never been in the country, so I did not know what to think. The Americans are a bit closed, in the sense that they don´t speak to you that much, but you always found some that were great and you had a lot of fun. I think that I got on best with the Americans at my workplace, with those that I went skiing with and did other programs with, than the Argentines with whom I lived. It is a matter of opening yourself up, not being so closed.
What things would you bear in mind for the next time you have to travel to work in another country?
If I had to work in another country, I would bear many things in mind, since we had a few problems. First and foremost, I would look for housing before arriving at the place, since a group of Argentines and I had not looked for a house, and we had to stay in a hostel for 15 days. On the other hand, I would try and look for a good job, because I met people there who were treated badly at work, they were fired under bad pretexts and earned low salaries.
Would you repeat the program? Would you recommend the program to your friends?
I would repeat the program because I believe it was an excellent experience that is worth doing, given that it opens your mind in many ways. This trip makes you leave your house, where your parents do everything for you, and spend time in another country, where you have to learn to live by yourself. Yes, I would recommend this trip to my friends for all the above reasons.
